INHS Hellbender Education Kit with base
Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) are North America's largest salamanders and their range extends from southern New York to northern Georgia and west to Missouri and Arkansas. Hellbenders are fully aquatic and live in cool, clear streams with moderate to fast current. Hellbender populations have been declining at an alarming rate and will need help if they are to survive.
This kit includes a life-sized model of a hellbender, individually hand cast in polyurethane resin from a mold derived from an actual museum specimen. Each model is meticulously hand painted and comes with a base resembling the slate rock of their stream habitat and a booklet with information and activities on hellbenders. Price for the kit is $140 plus shipping and handling. Please allow 4 weeks for arrival.
INHS Hellbender Education Kit without base
This is the same as above but does not have the rocky base. This kit includes the model and a booklet with information and activities on hellbenders. Price for the kit is $120 plus shipping and handling. Please allow 2-3 weeks for arrival.
INHS Mudpuppy Model
This is a hand painted, life-size model of a mudpuppy. This model is intended to be used to show the differences between mudpuppies and hellbenders, both of which are fully aquatic salamanders. Please allow 2-3 weeks for arrival.
INHS Hellbender Education Kit with base and Mudpuppy Model
This kit includes both a life-sized model hellbender on rock base and a life-sized hand painted model of a mudpuppy to show the differences between these two fully aquatic salamanders. Price for the kit is $170 plus shipping and handling. Please allow 6 weeks for arrival.
INHS Emerald Ash Borer Education Kit
The Emerald Ash Borer is a beetle that was introduced from Asia, first seen in the US in Michigan in 2002 and has since spread across the eastern US and west to Colorado. For more information on this beetle, see the Illinois Cooperative Agricultural Pest Survey or The Emerald Ash Borer website.
To help raise awareness about this devastating pest, Illinois Natural History Survey staff have created this emerald ash borer education kit which includes a booklet to educate the public how to identify this destructive exotic pest. The kit includes a 12-inch-long model of the emerald ash borer on a 17 inch by 11 inch base. Each model is individually hand-cast in polyurethane resin from a mold derived from an actual specimen. Each model is meticulously hand-painted and comes with a base resembling ash bark with a beetle exit hole.
Price for the kit is $350 plus shipping and handling. Please allow 10-12 weeks for arrival.
